Biography

After a number of years in County and City government in Miami Florida and Philadelphia, Matt moved to Penn as Budget Analyst in the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) in 2001.  Over the ensuing years he served as the Director of the SAS Office of Budget and Decision Support; Executive Director of the Chemistry Department; and Executive Director of SAS Facilities Planning and Operations before he was appointed as Vice Dean of Arts and Sciences in 2014.

Matt served nine years as Vice Dean; during that time he partnered both around the University and with varied departments and programs in SAS, helping to sustain the school’s financial resources while leading innovations across Computing, Administration, and Facilities Projects, including the Perelman Center, the Levin Building, and the upcoming Vagelos Lab and Physical Sciences Buildings, all of which are significantly advancing Penn’s core missions of research and education.

Matt Lane was appointed as the Associate Provost for Finance and Planning, marking another pivotal transition in his career on September 1, 2023. In this new capacity, he will support four teams:  Finance and Administration, Human Resources, Academic Technology and Planning, and the Planning, Design, and Construction teams. This expanded role underscores his exceptional capabilities and the trust vested in his strategic vision for the University’s financial, budgeting, and planning endeavors.
