Valarie Swain-Cade McCoullum

Vice Provost for University Life

Dr. Valarie Ena Swain-Cade McCoullum, a native Philadelphian who is a graduate of the Philadelphia High School for Girls, has served at Penn for thirty-four years and holds the position of Vice Provost for University Life. The Office of the Vice Provost for University Life (VPUL) has been recognized as one of the best student and community service organizations in higher education, and VPUL services are delivered through six major program divisions: Access & Achievement Programs; Campus Resource Centers; Facility & Administrative Services; Health & Wellness Programs; Student Activities; and Urban Engagement Initiatives.

Dr. Cade believes that Penn students benefit enormously from both the renowned interdisciplinary education offered at Penn and from the diversity of the campus community. She also considers the life of Penn students to be rich in promise and possibility because of the active integration of academic support and co-curricular services in performing arts, community service, peer health education, mentoring and cultural programming.

Throughout her career, Dr. Cade has been the recipient of numerous national awards. She completed her undergraduate work at Penn State University, and her graduate and post-doctoral studies at Temple University, Penn's Wharton School and Harvard University.
