About the lecture: The Phoebe S. Leboy Lecture is awarded annually to an outstanding scholar who catalyzes opportunities for women in academia; the lectureship was created in 2013 by the Penn Forum for Women Faculty in honor of the late Penn faculty member Phoebe S. Leboy. 

About this year’s speaker, Rita Colwell: Rita Colwell is a Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland at College Park and at Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, senior advisor and chairman emeritus at Canon US Life Sciences, Inc., and president and chairman of CosmosID, Inc. Dr. Rita Colwell’s interests are focused on global infectious diseases, water, and health. Dr. Colwell developed an international network to address emerging infectious diseases and water issues, including safe drinking water for both the developed and developing world, in collaboration with Safe Water Network, headquartered in New York City. She served as the eleventh director of the National Science Foundation (NSF) from 1998 to 2004. In her capacity as NSF director, she served as co-chair of the Committee on Science of the National Science and Technology Council. Before joining NSF, Dr. Colwell was president of the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute and a professor of microbiology and biotechnology. She was also a member of the National Science Board from 1984 to 1990.

One of Colwell’s major interests is K-12 science and mathematics education, graduate science and engineering education, and the increased participation of women and minorities in science and engineering. She has held many advisory positions in the U.S. government, nonprofit science policy organizations, and private foundations, as well as in the international scientific research community. Colwell is a nationally-respected scientist and educator, and has authored or co-authored 19 books and more than 800 scientific publications. She produced the award-winning film, “Invisible Seas,” and has served on editorial boards of numerous scientific journals, including GeoHealth, which she founded at AGU in 2015. 

About Phoebe Leboy: Phoebe S. Leboy was a Professor of Biochemistry at PSOM and was a faculty member from 1966 to 2005. A tireless advocate for women in academia, Dr. Leboy served on many University-wide committees on equity and was Chair of the Faculty Senate. She received the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching in 2005. After her retirement from Penn, she served as President of the Association for Women in Science.

This Tribeca Film Festival 2020 Official Selection chronicles the experiences of three women in academic science, Nancy Hopkins, Raychelle Burks, and Jane Willenbring. The documentary connects topics such as academic power structures, a lack of women in leadership, and the gender harassment iceberg analogy. View the trailer here. Participants will receive a weeklong opportunity to view the film on their own, and then will meet for an online discussion session.

Democracy and Truth—and Elections

Wednesday, March 17 from 1-2pm

Please join us as Sophia Rosenfeld discusses her recent book, Democracy and Truth, in light of the recent elections.

Sophia Rosenfeld is Walter H. Annenberg Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania, where she teaches intellectual and cultural history and the history of democracy. She is the author of many articles and books, including Common Sense: A Political History (2011), which won the Mark Lynton History Prize, and Democracy and Truth: A Short History (2019). She has just finished a three-year stint as Vice President (Research Division) of the American Historical Association. 

Her talk will focus on the arguments presented in her most recent book, bringing them up to date through a discussion of lies about election fraud and their implications.

Please join us for a conversation with Vice Provost for Faculty Laura Perna, Vice Provost for Research Dawn Bonnell, and Professor of Epidemiology and University Ombuds Jennifer Pinto-Martin. Focused on the personal aspects of re-entry into regular academic life, the speakers will discuss University plans to address and evaluate gender disparities resulting from the pandemic, practical advice on restarting research disrupted by the crisis, and combatting burnout to prepare for a return to campus, in-person teaching, and regular academic life. The presentation will be followed by a Q & A.

Dear Pandemic: Nerdy Girls Navigating the COVID-19 Overwhelm

Friday, April 30 from 1:30-2:30pm

Please join us as we welcome Dr. Alison Buttenheim, co-founder of Dear Pandemic, a COVID-19 information campaign led by an interdisciplinary all-women team of researchers and clinicians whose mission is “to educate and empower individuals to successfully navigate the COVID-19 overwhelm.”
With over 120,000 followers across seven social media platforms, Dear Pandemic answers pressing questions from the community and translates complex and dynamic scientific news into real-world guidance for the general public. Dr. Buttenheim will talk about starting Dear Pandemic and about gender and scientific expertise during COVID-19.
