Sexual Violence and Trauma in Conflict: Rethinking the Cost of War

The United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Zainab Hawa Bangura, will address rape and other forms of conflict-related sexual violence as a “cost- free” and devastating weapon of war. Special Representative Bangura will discuss her visits to the Middle East and ISIS’s war on women, including Yazidi, Christian and Turkmen Shia minorities, as a "tactic of terrorism." She will focus on her UN mandate challenging impunity in the DRC and South Sudan and the psycho-social support needed for survivors of violence in countries ranging from Iraq, Syria, Bosnia, Congo, Somalia and the Central African Republic. The keynote and the discussion that will follow will use the framework of international law to address the human, economic and psychosocial costs of sexual violence on women and their global communities.
