Academic Departments and Programs

Students interested in art and culture have a wide variety of majors and minors to choose from across the campus, and Penn’s commitment to integrated knowledge makes it possible to combine these options in rich and varied ways, working both locally and globally, and moving always among history, theory and practice.

In addition to studying the literary arts and culture of individual countries and cultures through Africana Studies, Asian-American Studies, Classical Studies, Comparative LiteratureEast Asian Languages and Civilizations, English, Germanic Languages and Literatures, Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, Romance Languages, Slavic Languages and Literatures, South Asian Studies, Penn undergraduates can also participate in academic programs that focus more exclusively on the visual, literary, and performing arts. These programs prepare them for the many career paths that are open to Liberal Arts majors, but also gives them particular opportunities that help them to pursue careers as artists, arts managers, curators, designers, educators, filmmakers, performers, scholars, urban planners, and writers.
