Andy Warhol’s first solo museum exhibition, held at ICA in 1965, was so crowded he had to escape through a hole cut in the gallery roof. Agnes Martin, Paul Thek, Laurie Anderson, Keith Haring, David Hammons, Robert Mapplethorpe: the list of groundbreaking artists ICA showed early in their careers is breathtaking. For 50 years ICA has brought the best new art to Philadelphia, and Penn students have been involved at every stage of the process.

A Penn education goes beyond the classroom. Come to ICA to challenge yourself to see in new ways: experience ahead-of-the-curve exhibitions, provocative performances, live music, poetry readings, and artists’ talks. Mark your calendars for Fall and Spring FREE FOR ALLS, packed with music, food, new ideas, and art to make and take.

Amy Sadao, the Daniel W. Dietrich, II Director of ICA, invites prospective and current Penn students to stop by ICA often:

“Penn offers unparalleled opportunities to students interested in art. Is there a better site from which to experience contemporary art than the culturally rich city of Philadelphia? I’m thrilled to meet and work with undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff. Remember, ICA is free for all and here to welcome you into the conversation.”

Penn students can participate in ICA through our frequent public programs; join us as work-study interns or volunteers; become a member of the student advisory board; or take one of our year-long seminars, collaborations with the Center for Programs in Contemporary Writing and the Department of the History of Art. Recently poet Kenny Goldsmith led students through a year-long investigation of the work of Stefan Sagmeister, culminating in a published book, and Dr. Gwendolyn Dubois Shaw’s Spiegel Freshman Seminar began by exploring Glenn Ligon’s 1998 ICA exhibition Unbecoming, resulting in a new, student-curated, group exhibition.
